Chip Read Error

Chip Read Error

Chip Read Error:

  1. Chip read error suggests the chip card was removed before the EMV transaction completed. If the chip card was removed before the transaction was sent to the processor, the terminal won’t send an automatic reversal to the processor because the transaction never processed.

  1. If the chip card was removed after the processor approved the transaction, but before the transaction completed, then the terminal will send an automatic reversal to the processor. This is a security feature required by EMV.

  1. If the chip read error is persistent, then it may already be due to a damaged chip reader. A test can be done to ensure if it is the case.

How to test the Chip Reader:

  1.  Traditional Process:
    1. First step is to access the Back Menu of the device by rebooting the device and holding on to the Function button.
    2. Once the PCI PED screen shows up, they need to hit the cancel button to get to the back menu.
    3. Under the back menu options, they need to look for Module Check
    4. Once under Module Check, they need to select ICC card reader and the machine will show reading which means it is waiting for a card to be inserted
    5. Once you insert a card it will display the result which should appear as the following:
      Card Test Processing
      1. - User Card: Ok
      2. - Sam1 Slot: N/A
      3. - Sam2 Slot: N/A
*(If the User Card Shows OK, then the chip reader itself is working, and if it shows ERR then it is a bad chip reader)

  2. Android Terminal Process
    1. From the main screen, open “Calculator”.
    2. Once the Calculator is open, insert a card in the ICC reader of the terminal.
    3. In the upper left-hand corner of the screen, the small “PAX” icon will turn into a card icon.
    4. If it’s green, the ICC reader is working.  If it doesn’t change or is another color, there is a problem with the ICC reader.
