PIN Pads and Peripherals

Running an SP20 PIN Pad & getting errors:

If using this Pin Pad with an S80, S500 or A80 terminal errors may occur got one of these reasons:

  • PIN Pad type in the BroadPOS or BroadPOS Marketplace needs to be set to “External” or “Auto” **
  • The PIN pad is too old to be compatible with newer applications**
  • Using the incorrect cable to connect the PIN Pad to the terminal
    •  For example, using a phone chord instead of the PIN Pad cable or using a competitor’s cable.
    • The cable may be meant for connecting the PIN Pad to a non-PAX device.
  1. For example, plugging it into the phone jack instead of the PINPad jack
  2. Plugging the cable into the wrong jack on the terminal.
  1. Might be a bad cable – try switching cables
  • The PIN Pad may not be injected

** Please reference the KB article Auto Detect Error - PIN pad for additional information on PIN pad compatibility.

Contactless transactions with an SP20:

If using an SP20 V4 or a Traditional SP20 with model numbers SP20-E00 (USA) or SP20-130-4E0 set the Peripherals in the file to External PIN Pad Type and Contactless Module to Auto.
  1. For an SP20 V4, the Contactless will activate on the PIN pad.
  2. For a traditional PIN pad, Contactless will activate on the S80.
  3. Please note that new applications only support SP20-E00 and SP20-130-4E0.  Other traditional models are End of Life and are not supported.

FAQs

Does the S80, the SP20, or both devices have to be Encrypted? If you are using Contactless on the SP20 V4 both terminals need to be encrypted.

If my merchant wants to begin taking Debit and EBT transactions but their S80/S500/A80 isn’t encrypted, adding an encrypted SP20 will allow these transactions?  Yes, but only if those transactions are all contactless. It is recommended to have both encrypted to sure you are cover all transaction types.

Is the SP20 the only PIN pad option?  No.  There are SP30s terminals that are programmed to work strictly as PIN pad.  Please contact Sales for further information. (Sales at pax.us)

How can I connect SP20 to a computer? – SP20 is serial but it needs an adaptor for DB9. It can be connected to a computer using one of the options (assuming the sp20 is equipped with the s80 cable):

  1. SP30 DB9-RJ11 Cable 200204030000155+ power supply
  1. 200204030000039 + power supply (or USB power dongle)
  1. 200204030000003 (with power from PS2 ports or PS2 to USB converter.

What is the correct baud rate for communication with MagTek readers? – The default rate is 115200 bps (PAX terminal will automatically negotiate to the MAGTEK Baud Rate and supports 9600/1200/2400…)

What are the required cables to run the MagTek with the S80? – There are two cables required for operation. The first is a bridge cable made by MagTek required: 6P4C Plug adaptor, 1000001866-A. The second depends on which MagTek reader you are using:

  • For the Micr Mini: 22517563 REV.A
  • For the Micr Micrimage: 22410302 REV.C
I have the connections set between my S80 and my MagTek Reader and it reads checks when I pass them through, but when I initiate an actual transaction the reader doesn’t respond to the request. What should I do?

Make sure you have “Check Reader” turned on in the terminal. You can do that in BroadPOS by enabling the “Check Reader” option. You can also do it at the terminal level:
  • Press “Menu”
  • Select Option 3 (Operation Settings)
  • Select Option 9 (Peripherals)
  • Input the password
  • Select Option 3 (Check Reader)
