Surcharge Fee vs Cash Discount

Surcharge Fee vs. Cash Discount

Inform your customer these 2 features are NOT the same.

Surcharge Fee:
  1. This is only charged on CREDIT transactions. Legally, Debit cards can not be charged a surcharge fee.
  2. First Data made changes to their processing in 2018 and if a consumer uses their DEBIT card as CREDIT they will not be charged a fee. This feature may function differently with other HOSTs.
    1. The EMV CHIP identifies/reads the DEBIT AID (Application Identifier) for this card, therefore, no surcharge fee will be applied.
No Surcharge on Debit Resources:

Cash Discount:
  1. This feature is for TRUE cash sales. The merchant will process a Cash Sale and reward their customer for paying with CASH.
  2. The Cash Discount feature can not be used with a Debit or Credit Card.
  3. First Data no longer supports the Cash Discount Feature.

****AID (Application Identifier)****
An AID is used to uniquely identify each EMV application that a terminal supports, and every AID has an associated card scheme and parameters relating to how the application needs to be processed.
